Breathe Better in the New Year

person-at-desk-trying-to-work-surrounded-by-tissues-and-blowing-nose

While most New Year’s resolutions are related to health in some way, they’re usually things like getting more exercise, eating more vegetables, or drinking more water. Rarely does a resolution have anything to do with breathing. And yet, you breathe far more often than you eat or drink!

With the average American spending upwards of 90% of their time indoors, the air you’re breathing in there has a big impact on your health.

How can you improve your well-being through breathing? By making sure that breath is the cleanest air you can make it. With an air purifier, you can cut contamination, reduce the risk of illness, and feel better with every breath you take. The benefits are amazing.

What Lurks in the Air

Outdoors, the air quality is almost always better than indoors (except when wildfire smoke blows across the country). Indoors, because the air continually circulates, contaminants are able to accumulate and they don’t simply blow away. These contaminants include mold spores, pollen, pet dander, household cleaning chemicals, volatile organic compounds, and more.

How Air Purifiers Work

Did you know that it’s possible to sanitize things with just the power of light? UV air purifiers do just that. These are installed as an addition to your home’s HVAC system, so all the air that passes through your ducts must pass through the purifier. First, there’s a filter, to trap larger particles. Then, there’s a very specific frequency of ultraviolet light, which sanitizes the air.

How can light do that? Well, tiny germs might be capable of causing big problems, but in some ways, they’re also very delicate. Their critical structures, the proteins that hold them together, are only protected by the thinnest little membrane. And UV light at that frequency is capable of penetrating that membrane and unraveling the proteins, causing the germs to simply fall apart.

Air Purifier Safety

Because they’re able to cause such destruction to tiny pathogens, people sometimes wonder if UV air purifiers are safe. The answer is yes! While the light might be comparable to a tiny tanning bed, not something you’d want to spend hours lying in, it is contained within your HVAC system where it can’t affect you. In fact, they’re so safe and effective, they’re used everywhere from hospitals to water treatment facilities.

Benefits of Breathing Purified Air

People find that their health improves in many ways after having an air purifier installed. They get ill less frequently, having to take fewer days off work due to being sick or caring for sick family members. They have fewer asthma attacks, fewer allergy symptoms, fewer headaches, improved sleep at night, and higher energy levels during the day.

Another benefit that may surprise you is that your home will smell better. Unpleasant odors are caused by things like bacteria floating through the air. Your air purifier neutralizes the bacteria, so whether it was sweaty sneakers, litter box, or last night’s fish dinner, the smell is gone and your air is fresh and pleasant. And since it kills mold spores, mildew smells will disappear and mold colonies won’t grow.
